SINGAPORE (CNI)--Styron Asia Ltd (SAL), a 50:50 joint venture between Dow Chemical and Asahi Kasei, has pushed back the startup of its 120 000 tonne/year polystyrene (PS) project in Zhangjiagang, China, to the later part of Q3-2002 from mid 2002, CNI was told on Thursday.
A Dow spokeswoman said the project had always been scheduled to come onstream in Q2/Q3 2002 and therefore the Q3 startup date did not constitute a delay.
She added that the project was progressing well within the expectations of both partners.
Oversupply has caused PS July prices to languish at $650-670/tonne cif Hong Kong for general-purpose PS (GPPS), down $50-70/tonne from June. July prices for high-impact PS (HIPS) have also dropped by $50/tonne to $730/tonne cif Hong Kong.
