Teijin's Singapore PC production hit by CO disruption

SINGAPORE (CNI)--Production at Teijin Polycarbonate's plants on Jurong Island, Singapore, has been disrupted following Singapore Syngas' declaration of force majeure on its carbon monoxide (CO) supplies earlier this month, sources close to the company said.

Market sources said Teijin was currently running its polycarbonate lines at less than full capacity. The Japanese major produces 130 000 tonne/year of polycarbonate from three lines.

Singapore Syngas's declaration forced German major Celanese to announce force majeure on its supplies of acetic acid and derivative products for its Asian customers on 8 August. Singapore Syngas has estimated that it will resume CO deliveries at the end of this month, according to Celanese.

Teijin declined to comment on whether it would go to the extent of declaring force majeure on its PC supplies. However, it admitted that it was holding meetings with Singapore Syngas to discuss how to resolve the issue.

Besides Singapore Syngas, Teijin also sources CO from a second supplier, SOXAL (Singapore Oxygen Air Liquide). It was not immediately clear how much CO Teijin buys from SOXAL.
