S'pore petchem output grew 33% in July year-on-year: EDB

SINGAPORE (CNI)--Singapore's petrochemical output increased by 33% year-on-year in July, largely due to lower than normal production in July 2001 because of maintenance shutdowns of downstream plants, the Economic Development Board (EDB) said on Monday.

The chemicals cluster as a whole grew by 15.2% in July, leading to a cumulative growth of 9.4% in the first seven months of the year compared to the same period in 2001.

Output of industrial/speciality products continued to shine in July, increasing by 11.8% in July in response to sustained demand from regional markets, while there was also a higher output of naphtha to meet demand, the EDB said.

The biomedical sciences (BMS) cluster continued its rapid growth in July, increasing output by 51.4%, while pharmaceutical production grew by 58.7% year-on-year.

The entire BMS cluster grew by over 60% in its cumulative output for the first seven months of the year, helping to boost manufacturing output as a whole to 6.4% over the same period.

Manufacturing output grew by 17.8% month-on-month in July this year.
