EU environment ministers face crucial meeting on Seveso II

LONDON (CNI)--European Union (EU) environment ministers meet in Luxembourg on Thursday (17th October) in an attempt to agree on two crucial initiatives which have major implications for the chemical industry and future environmental policy, the Environmental Council said in a statement on Tuesday.
The ministers will gather in a Council meeting to discuss amendments and extensions to the Seveso II Directive on control of major hazards involving dangerous substances.
They will also seek to reach agreement on the Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive.
Chairman of the Environment Council and Danish Minister for the Environment Hans Christian Schmidt said the revision of the Seveso II Directive is ‘absolutely vital’, as proven by the fatal accident at a fertiliser plant in Toulouse, France last year.
The scope of this directive therefore needs to be extended, he said.
The Council meeting will also focus on the implementation of the Cartagena Protocol on biosafety in connection with transboundary movement, management, and use of living genetically modified organisms (GMOs).
Other key items on the agenda include the establishment of a trading scheme of quotas for emissions of greenhouse gases and the tracing and labelling of GMOs.
