UK vocational award body urges cos to tighten H&S procedures

LONDON (CNI)—Chemical companies must ensure that their health and safety (H&S) procedures are robust enough to withstand civil damages claims from employees following proposed changes to UK H&S regulations, City and Guilds said Friday.

The UK vocational award body has brought out a new qualification in advance of tightening UK health and safety at work regulations. It said the new qualification is for staff with little or no experience in health and safety.

Regulations are presently under review in Britain as Parliament responds to pressure from the European Commission (EC) to update its legislation.

City and Guilds’ health and training specialist Peter Bennett said that in whatever form the new legislation takes, it “will increase the scope for employees to bring civil liability claims against employers if they are injured or made ill by their work”.
