SINGAPORE (CNI)--Huntsman Chemical Co Australia is hoping to restart its 110 000 tonne/year styrene monomer (SM) plant in Melbourne, Victoria, by 11 November after closing the unit in mid-September due to mechanical problems, a company spokesman told CNI on Wednesday.

The spokesman said the plant was shut down on 17 September shortly after it was restarted following a routine maintenance turnaround. He said there was a problem with the plant's superheater which caused damage to some parts of the unit.

Repairs to the plant were being finalised and it would be restarted in about 10 days' time, after which it would take about one week to build up to full capacity.

The spokesman said Huntsman had been able to continue SM supplies to its customers by relying on its own inventory and by importing SM supplies.

He said investigations were still under way into what had caused the problem that closed the plant.
