LONDON (CNI)--Anglo-Dutch group Shell said Monday it has set up a new chemicals supply and marketing company in western Europe as part of continuing plans to streamline its chemicals operations.
Shell Chemicals Europe will be responsible for all chemicals sales contracts, supply chain management and procurement of feedstocks and process chemicals across western Europe. To be based in Rotterdam, The Netherlands it will become operational from 1 November.
In a brief statement, Shell Chemicals said the new structure is designed to improve the speed, efficiency and overall ease of doing business for customers and suppliers. Primary contacts for customers and suppliers, however, will remain unchanged.
The new structure will allow Shell to streamline operations in Europe and gain IT (information technology) and central data management synergies by doing so, said a spokeswoman.
There will be few significant staff changes, she said, but there would be changes to the way some jobs are carried out. The new company will be staffed by 200 people, mainly in Rotterdam. Customer services in western Europe will continue to be provided from Eschborn in Germany, Provence in France, Rotterdam, and Chester in northwest England, UK.
Fran Keeth, executive vice president customer fulfillment and product business units for Shell Chemicals Ltd, said the move was part of a drive to make it "easy to do business with Shell chemicals companies".
Jan van der Eijk has been appointed general manager of the new company.
Shell was unable immediately to quantify the planned savings from its chemicals supply chain initiative or estimate the new company's turnover.
