LONDON (CNI)--BP is to shut permanently a 30 000 tonne/year polystyrene (PS) line at Marl in Germany in response to low prices and overcapacity.
A spokesman for the UK-headquartered energy and chemicals group said Wednesday that the closure, planned for the beginning of next month, would reduce BP's approximately 430 000 tonne of total European PS capacity by about 7%.
BP, which has about 240 000 tonne of PS capacity at Marl, explained that the line to be closed was one of its oldest and least efficient.
It is understood that there are unlikely to be any redundancies as a direct result of the closure.
BP also has PS capacity at Wingles in France and Trelleborg in Sweden.
