HOUSTON (CNI)--Rohm & Haas (R&H) said Tuesday its methyl methacrylate (MMA) and acrylic acid production lines at Deer Park, Texas were briefly shut down today when a pipeline fire adjoining the site cut power to the plant.

But a spokeswoman for R&H said the off-site fire caused no damage to the company's facilities and that power was soon restored.

The 580 000 tonne/year acrylic acid production line and the 360 000 tonne/year MMA line were being restarted late Tuesday, according to R&H spokeswoman Beverly Melancon.

A statement issued by the company said that at approximately 14:14 Central time (20:15 GMT) Tuesday a fire was discovered near a metering station on a supply pipeline network adjacent to the plant site. The contents of the pipeline were not immediately known, R&H said, but the fire and the release were soon halted.

The company said its response team and the Deer Park Fire Department responded to the fire. No injuries have been reported, and R&H said the incident posed no threat to nearby communities.

Melancon said the MMA and acrylic acid lines were shut down for about two hours. With the restart under way, she said R&H does not anticipate any interruption of product supply to its outside customers. She noted that 80% of the plant's production is for captive use by R&H.

She said the power outage also shut down operations at the site's administration offices for a short time.

The cause of the accident has yet to be determined.

Deer Park is located about 20 miles east of Houston and is home to numerous chemical production facilities. R&H is headquartered at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
