Celanese Chemicals sells amines units to US Amines

HOUSTON (CNI)--Celanese Chemicals said Wednesday it has sold its global allylamines and US alkylamines businesses to US Amines for an undisclosed sum in a deal that will close by year end.

Dallas, Texas-based Celanese Chemicals said the sale includes transfer to US Amines of Celanese production facilities at Bucks, Alabama and Portsmouth, Virginia. Both of those units will continue operations under US Amines, Celanese said, and "most of the approximately 65 employees" at both sites will be retained by US Amines.

The capacities of the two production units were not disclosed, and Celanese officials were not immediately available Wednesday to respond to questions.

The two businesses generated combined sales of some $51m (Euro50m) annually, Celanese said in its statement.

Celanese said the sale is consistent with its strategy of streamlining its chemical intermediates business.

The company also noted that it will continue to produce and market amines products, such as methlylamines, alkylamines and a variety of specialty amines from facilities in Oberhausen, Germany and Cangrejera, Mexico.
