The contract to build BASF's tetrahydrofuran (THF) complex in Caojing, China, has gone to Technip-Coflexip (ECN 16 September 2002). Under the lump sum contract, the French contractor will provide engineering, procurement and construction management services.Engineering and procurement will be carried out in Technip-Coflexip's offices in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and Shanghai, China. The contractor will install BASF's proprietary technology to convert butane directly to THF and then to polytetrahydrofuran (polyTHF).
The plants, which will produce 80 000 tonne/year THF and 60 000 tonne/year polyTHF, are due for completion in the second half of 2004.
