SINGAPORE (CNI)--Saudi Chevron Phillips (SCP) is expected to release a pre-qualifying list of engineering firms this month for the selection of a turnkey contractor for its $1bn petrochemical complex in Al-Jubail, Saudi Arabia, according to a source close to the project.
A joint venture between Chevron Phillips Chemical and local company Saudi Industrial Investment Group, SCP is expected to produce 700 000 tonne/year of styrene, 145 000 tonne/year of propylene and 89 000 tonne/year of mixed C4s as final products from a cracker based on pentane and heptane as feedstocks. Pentane and heptane would be obtained from a unit that separates natural gasoline into various feeds.
Most of the products, except styrene, would be sold locally. Motor gasoline blend stock would be produced as a by-product for sale.
SCP has appointed Parsons Energy & Chemicals to conduct front-end design engineering work. Parsons is also expected to be the project-management consultant, although a contract has yet to be signed.
The source said ABB Lummus is expected to provide its technology for the styrene facility, via the ethylbenzene route. The contenders for ethylene licensing include Lummus, Linde, Stone & Webster and Technip, he added.
The complex is due onstream at the end of 2006.
