EC chem policy reforms will limit paint products, says VdL

FRANKFURT (CNI)--The German paints and coatings industry  association Verband der Lackindustrie (VdL) believes the European Commission's proposed chemicals registration, evaluation and authorisation (Reach) system will limit the variety of products on the market.

VdL general manager Michael Bross said many German coatings producers would be unable to find needed ingredients for their low-volume specialities, such as ultra-violet (UV) coatings for furniture and cars or specialised anti-corrosion preparations for the machinery or bridge building sectors.

He claimed this could force some paint makers to shut production facilities and cut jobs.

Similar claims were made on Thursday by Jose Uriz Echegaray, president of the Spanish paint manufacturers association. He said the EC's Reach proposals would be impossible for Spanish paint makers to afford and could force them out of business or out of the EU.
