LONDON (CNI)--BASF vice chairman and president of the European Chemical Industry Council (Cefic) Eggert Voscherau was on Wednesday appointed to the German Council for Sustainable Development by Chancellor Gerhard Schroder.

Voscherau contributed to Germany’s Commission on Modern Services in the Labor Market (Hartz Commission) and is also a member of the Commission for Sustainability in the Financing of the Social Security System (Rurup Commission).

BASF said he will assume his new function on completing his work for the Rurup Commission. However, the firm was unable tell CNI when this might be, although Voscherau is expected to join the German Sustainability Council sometime later this year.

For two years, Voscherau has headed BASF’s own Sustainability Council, which was established to implement management structures for sustainable development throughout the company.

The German Council for Sustainable Development, which is made up of 19 public figures, was established by Schroder in April 2001. The Council advises the German government on its policy for sustainable development, proposes specific areas of activity and projects, and aims to make sustainability an important public issue.
