BOC's medical gases arm is to build a major gas production facility near Manchester, UK, to supply hospitals in the country.

The multi-million pound facility will come online this autumn and produce oxygen, nitrous oxide, Entonox (an analgaesic comprising a 50:50 mix of nitrous oxide and oxygen), and other medical gases, all meeting European Union pharmacopoeia standards.

The technology has been developed by BOC in the US for manufacture of high purity gas mixtures for laboratory use.

The plant will also produce gas cylinders, including BOC's lightweight carbon fibre cylinders.
