HOUSTON (CNI)--Shares of drug discovery firm Nektar Therapeutics rose 10% or $1.11 to $12.59 Monday after the company said new research suggests its Exubera inhaled insulin product reduced blood sugar levels in diabetics.
Nektar Therapeutics (formerly Inhale Therapeutic Systems) said the data, based on studies by Pfizer and Aventis, was presented at the 63rd annual scientific sessions of the American Diabetes Association in New Orleans, Louisiana.
Exubera is being developed for patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes through a collaboration between Pfizer and Aventis.
The company said there are approximately 17m in the US with diabetes with 90-95% of all cases accounting for type 2 diabetes associated with age, obesity and family history.
In type 2 diabetes, either the body does not produce enough insulin or the cells cannot properly use the insulin the body produces.
Nektar Therapeutics of San Carlos, California provides drug delivery technologies, expertise and manufacturing to enable the development of high-value, differentiated therapeutics.
