West Europe chlorine output down 2.5% in May from April

LONDON (CNI)--Western Europe chlorine output and caustic soda stocks both fell in May compared with the preceding month, according to figures released on Thursday by Euro Chlor.

The Brussels-based chloralkali producers association said chlorine output fell 2.5% to 780 970 tonne and stocks of caustic soda dropped 5.8% to 341 207 tonne. 

Compared with the same month last year, chlorine output in May fell 3.7%. Figures for caustic soda stocks in May 2002 were not available.

Capacity utilisation rates in the chloralkali sector averaged 82.6% in May, down from 87.5% in the previous month and 86.5% for the first quarter. Capacity utilisation in May last year was 88%.
