LONDON (CNI)--French chemicals firm Atofina is to close one of the two lines at its polystyrene (PS) plant in Stalybridge, UK, a spokeswoman confirmed to CNI on Friday.

The closure, effective July 2004, will result in plant capacity falling to 70 000 tonne/year from the current 110 000 tonne/year, she said.

The spokeswoman explained that the capacity adjustment was needed because the UK PS market has been declining for several years.

She said there will be minimal job losses due to existing vacancies, redeployment and early retirement. Some 110 people work at the Stalybridge plant.
