SINGAPORE (CNI)--The Dow Chemical Company is considering building a world-scale chemical plant in China to produce chloroform for the domestic market.
Dow Chlorinated Organics business director Pam Butcher said the company was carrying out an in-depth evaluation study on a chlorofform facility in China which underlined its commitment to the Chinese market. Butcher said Dow believed the market had great potential for sustainable growth and future development.
A new chemical facility in China would strengthen the company's global leadership position in the fluorochemical industry. Dow Greater China president Frankie Ko said the study covered all aspects related to the possible construction of the new facility, including potential suppliers.
Ko said different locations were being considered for the project, including Dow's existing manufacturing site in Zhangjiagang on the Yangtze River near Shanghai. Dow is a global producer of basic chemical products and the world's largest supplier of chlorinated organic products and services.
These products include chlorinated intermediates and chlorinated solvents. They are used in fluorocarbons/fluoropolymers production, pharmaceuticals manufacturing, metal cleaning/degreasing, chemicals processing industry, dry-cleaning, coating and adhesive formulations, aerosol products formulation, paint formulation and stripping, and urethane foam blowing.
