LONDON (CNI)--Sabina Petrochemicals LLC, the joint venture between BASF, Shell and Atofina, will start producing on-spec material at the world’s largest butadiene extraction facility by the end of March, CNI learned on Wednesday.

The facility at Port Arthur in Texas is part of a C4 olefins complex which contains a 410 000 tonne/year butadiene extraction unit and a 300 000 tonne/year indirect alkylation unit, BASF spokesman Jonathan Evans explained.

“We are going through the commissioning process now and it’s going well,” said Evans. “We’re getting towards the final stages,” he continued.

The complex, which has cost an estimated $200m (Euro164m) to build, will get two thirds of its feedstock from Shell and a third from an adjacent naphtha steam cracker jointly owned by Germany's BASF and Atofina of France. BASF would not disclose the intended destination of finished product.

Sabina Petrochemicals is owned by Shell Chemical LP (60%), BASF Corporation (24%) and Atofina Petrochemicals Inc. (16%).

The complex is located about 95 miles east of Houston and employees 40 people.
