SINGAPORE (CNI)--Japan’s ST Liquid Crystal Display Corp (ST-LCD), an equally held joint venture between Sony and Toyota Industries, has said it will invest Yen10bn ($91m/Euro77m) to expand its production capacity of low-temperature polysilicon thin film transistor liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) panels.
ST-LCD's production capacity at Aichi-Prefecture, Japan, will be increased by 25% to 40 000 base-plates/month in April 2005. Its current production capacity is 32 000 base platesmonth.
Since April 1999, when full-scale production began, ST-LCD has been producing small size TFT LCD panels used in mobile devices, including digital video and still cameras, personal digital assistants (PDAs) and cellular mobile phones.
US consultancy DisplaySearch expects production of LCDs and other flat-panel display (FPD) devices to triple globally over the next two years, with Asian chemical producers, in particular, expected to benefit.
Strong demand growth for LCD monitors and devices has been a large contributor to rising demand for methyl methacrylate (MMA) and polycarbonate (PC) resin in Asia, both of which are used to make diffusers for backlight units for large-sized LCDs.
