ADM chief executive Allen Andreas told an investor conference today that his company has “great research” in the trans fats area and has capacity to supply sufficient volumes of trans fats free materials to food producers.
Andreas was responding to analysts who asked if ADM will be able to handle a potential run on trans fats free oils as more and more food retailers are demanding that their food suppliers get rid of trans fats in their products.
Pointing to ADM’s global market presence in palm, corn, sunflower and other vegetable oils, Andreas said ADM can design and deliver in sufficient volumes “exactly the kind of product” food companies need.
Andreas described the shift to trans fats free products as “considerable” for the agribusiness sector and noted that it is “an exciting new area” for ADM.
He also said the trend toward trans fats free materials might bring a shift from soybean oil to corn oil or canola oil.
Added Andreas: “[Food manufacturers] need companies like ADM to develop the kinds of factories that are needed to supply the volumes they need for their food products.”
According to Andreas, food manufacturers typically prefer to work closely only with a limited number of selected suppliers such as ADM to be able to quickly develop new products, guarantee safety and avoid costly product-recalls.
