HOUSTON (CNI)--ABB/BASF has been selected by China National Bluestar to provide technology for a 30 000 tonne/year butadiene extraction plant in Tianjin, China, the company said.

Engineering on the project has begun and start-up is expected in 2005.

The butadiene extraction unit will use ABB Lummus Global/BASF’s proprietary technology, which uses n-methylpyrrolidone (NMP) as a solvent. ABB says the solvent better enables the separation of butadiene from mixed butanes, resulting in a higher purity butadiene product and lower operating costs.

This project will be the fourth plant in China to utilise NMP-based technology.

Bloomfield, New Jersey-based ABB Lummus Global is the process engineering and construction unit of Swiss-based power and automation technology major ABB.
