LONDON (CNI)--German chemicals group BASF and the Chinese Research Academy for Environmental Sciences (Craes) on Wednesday signed an agreement to establish a strategic alliance in the fuels sector.

The aim is to jointly build an engine testing laboratory in Beijing, China, said BASF, adding that trial results obtained with the new engine dynamometer will be used to determine the quality of Chinese gasoline.

In addition, further improvements in the quality of automotive fuels and reductions in exhaust gas emissions will be sought on an ongoing basis and will be monitored at regular intervals, the firm added.

According to the agreement, BASF will support the project financially and will contribute its technology as well as research and development (R&D) in the fuels sector.

The engine dynamometer will be operated independently by Craes, which reports directly to the Chinese State Environmental Protection Administration (Sepa).

Financial details of the deal were not disclosed.
