India’s Reliance Industries has awarded Zimmer of Frankfurt am Main, Germany, the contract to build a polyester plant at Hazira in the State of Gujarat (ECN 12 July). The project comprises a continuous polycondensation plant and staple fibre spinning lines with a capacity of 210 000 tonne/year. It forms part of a total planned additional polyester capacity of 500 000 tonne/year.
Zimmer will supply technology, basic engineering and equipment and is responsible for supervision of erection and commissioning work.
Once the plant is commissioned, Reliance will have a total production capacity of almost 1.5m tonne/year of polyester filaments and staple fibres. When the total planned new capacity is on stream, the company’s polyester production capacity will rise to 1.8m tonne/year.
The fibres from the new plant are destined to be processed in the Indian textiles industries, mainly for blending with cotton.
