HOUSTON (CNI)--West Texas Intermediate reached $44.77/bbl Friday - a new record - following reports of a flash fire at BP’s Texas City, Texas refinery  and continuing problems at Russian oil company Yukos.

A minor fire at BP’s Texas City refinery was quickly extinguished Thursday, BP officials said, but not before driving up the price of crude on the Nymex.

Said Brian McIntyre, a petroleum analyst at ICIS-LOR, the global petrochemical pricing and market intelligence service:  “Crude spiked on the news of the refinery fire but then the anxiety faded when people realized it was only a minor incident.”

Bill Stephens, a spokesman with BP in Texas City, told CNI that the refinery continues in operation.  The 470 000 bbl/day refinery is reportedly the third biggest in the US.

He added:  “There was no  impact on supply, no impact on the community, no injuries, and no damage.   It was a very minor thing.”
