HOUSTON (CNI)--Florence, Kentucky-based Ticona said Monday it plans to increase prices for its ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMW-PE) products by $220.40/tonne (Euro183).

The price change, for customers in the Americas, is effective 1 October. It affects a range of product grades.

Mike Harding, Ticona's global sales and marketing manager for UHMW-PE products, said increases in energy and transportation costs have impacted the company’s polymer manufacturing business, especially for industrial grades.

He said in a statement: “Despite the ever-changing economic climate, Ticona continues to be committed globally to the UHMW-PE industry.”

He noted that the company recently added 10 000 tonnes of capacity at its Oberhausen plant in Germany, bringing its European-based capacity to about 40 000 tonnes/year. It started a Bishop, Texas plant in 2002 with a capacity of 30 000 tonnes/year.

Ticona is the technical polymers business of Celanese AG of Kronberg, Germany.
