HOUSTON (CNI)--BP has closed an 80 000 bbls/day ultraformer at its 550 000 bbls/day Texas City, Texas refinery following an accident in which three workers were injured, industry sources said Friday.

BP spokesman Scott Bean confirmed that three employees suffered burns from scalding water as they were working on a steam line. He said two were in serious condition at a hospital.

Bean would not discuss the accident’s impact on production. An ultraformer produces blending components that boost octane in gasoline. Bean said: “The refinery continues to operate and produce products for its customers.”

According to global price reporting and market intelligence service ICIS-LOR*, the 80 000 bbls/day reformer was shut in, pending an investigation of the accident. There was little impact on US markets.

BP recently applied to Texas authorities to restart a second, 65 000 bbls/day ultraformer that was severely damaged in a 30 March fire.
