LONDON (CNI)-- Lucite International has awarded AK Engineering a three-year, £3m ($5.4m/Euro4.4m) contract to provide services at its giant Cassel methyl methacrylate (MMA) plant on Teesside, northeast England it was announced on Wednesday.
The agreement - which takes effect immediately - covers environmental, health, safety and risk consultancy services, as well as engineering design and project management ranging from smaller scale plant modifications to major plant upgrades and debottlenecking.
The volume of work contracted is estimated at 35 000 to 40 000 man hours a year for a minimum of three years, with an option for further extension.
Cassel, at Billingham near Stockton, is the largest MMA monomer facility in Europe with a capacity of 200 000 tonne/year. It is designated a top-tier site under the UK's COMAH (Control of Major Accident Hazards) regulations, based on the European Seveso II Directive. Operators of such sites now have to produce a COMAH safety case and a major accident prevention policy (MAPP) and test their internal and external emergency plans - activities in which AK says it will be involved.
AK Engineering has been providing Lucite with support and engineering services at various sites over the last five years, as well as working on its MMA-Monomer 8 project, said AK's operations director Tony Jester.
The new alliance agreement is one of several similar deals that AK's parent, Norway-based Aker Kvaerner, has made with companies including General Electric and BASF, it said.
