MONTE CARLO, Monaco (CNI)--The aromatics upgrade planned for US commodity chemicals group Huntsman’s Teesside, UK facility is already underway, company president and chief executive Peter Huntsman confirmed with CNI on Monday.
The project was announced earlier this year along with the new polyethylene (PE) plant planned for the site, but the timing had not been detailed. A shutdown will take place at the reformate processing unit and associated aromatics number 2 facility in early October. The tie-in will be complete by early next year, Huntsman said.
Huntsman spoke with CNI today on the sidelines of the 38th annual European Petrochemical Association (EPCA) meeting here.
Mixed xylenes (MX) capacity at Huntsman Teesside will be increased by 100 000 tonne/year when full rates are reached in second quarter 2005. This will increase feedstock availability at the site, reducing the need for imports from the US. The existing paraxylene (PX) capacity of 340 000 tonne/year will increase by only about 4%, according to Huntsman.
According to Tim Smart of DuPont Sabanci Polyester Europe BV (DupontSa), this small PX expansion at Huntsman Teeside is not likely to improve the tight PX situation, which has been driving prices up in Europe,
A gap between supply and demand is pushing up contract numbers, with the latest October price settlement reported today at Euros 755/tonne delivered NWE, up Euros40/tonne on the September agreement.
Huntsman’s 400 000 tonne/year low-density PE (ldPE) plant at Teesside is due to start up in the third quarter 2007. The project was confirmed earlier this month.
The EPCA conference concludes tomorrow (28 September).
