EPCA ’04: BP Petronas restarts Malaysia acetic acid unit

MONTE CARLO, Monaco (CNI)--BP Petronas Acetyls restarted its 500 000 tonne/year acetic acid plant at Kerteh in Malaysia  last Thursday and is gradually raising the facility’s operating rate, a BP source told CNI here Monday.

 

The source, speaking on the sidelines of the European Petrochemical Association (EPCA) conference here, said that the plant went down for six days in August because of technical problems and ran at reduced rates during the rest of the month. It was again down for 15 days in early September and for a further three days later this month before last Thursday’s restart.

 

He added that the technical problems had now been resolved, but that a force majeure, announced in August, remains in place. ‘We are monitoring the situation to see when it can be lifted,’ he said.

 

The 38th annual EPCA conference runs through Tuesday (29th September).
