Mitsubishi Rayon to start work on China, Thai MMA projects

SINGAPORE (CNI)--Japan’s Mitsubishi Rayon Co (MRC) is set to start expanding its methyl methacrylate (MMA) operations in Asia, with construction work to start in October on a new Chinese plant and a debottlenecking of its Thai unit to be completed by year-end.

An MRC spokesman told CNI on Wednesday that the company would start work in early October on its 90 000 tonne/year new plant at Huizhou in Guangdong province, China. The plant has a targeted onstream date of the second quarter of 2006.

As well, the company plans to expand its Thai MMA joint venture to 90 000 tonne/year from 70 000 tonne/year by the end of this year.

The Mab Ta Phut-based Thai MMA is a joint venture with Cementhai Chemicals. The Chinese and Thai projects, together with the company’s existing MMA plant in Otake in Hiroshima prefecture, would give MRC a total MMA capacity of 400 000 tonne/year upon completion.

The Asian MA market has been strong due to high demand from the electronics industry, in particular from liquid crystal display (LCD) makers.
