|Elverding - Cefic's new president|
Elverding, who is chairman of Dutch specialty chemicals producer DSM, made the appeal at Cefic's general assembly while formally launching TrUSt - a new policy theme for the council.
The new theme was launched, said Elverding, against “an uncertain future” for the strategically important European chemicals industry.
Elverding, who replaced BASF deputy chairman Eggert Voscherau as head of Cefic, drew up a preliminary list of TrUSt issues which, he said, have never been more relevant for the sector. These include, ‘proactivity and transparency’, ‘dialogue’, ‘compliance’ and ‘innovation.’ A fifth issue, he noted, is the relationship between Cefic and other chemical industry associations.
Elverding said discussions and debates on major issues such as Reach (registration, evaluation and authorisation of chemicals) and emissions trading were taking place on a continuous basis. He added that to advance these talks in a constructive way, there should be more dialogue and co-operation between companies, other European industry associations, European institutions, governments and non-governmental organisations (NGOs). Mutual trust is needed to make this possible, he stressed. "The public should know that their anxieties and interests are duly taken into account.”
The efficiency and effectiveness of chemicals representation is high on the agenda in Europe, said Elverding, who has been elected for a two year term. Cefic continues its work to deliver an improved and more efficient representation of the chemical industry in the region, he noted.
“In addition, we will step up our cooperation with other regions in the world," Elverding declared. "Contacts with our US counterpart (ACC) are already intensifying,” he added. “But looking at developments in the world it makes sense to increase cooperation with organisations in countries such as China, India and Japan as well.”
The Cefic general assembly is being held this year in conjunction with meetings of the International Council of Chemical Associations and the SCI European chemical industry meeting which attracts chief executives and industry representatives from around the world. It is organised under the under the ‘global chemical industry European convention’ banner.
Top level industry meetings have become more focused in the past two years on Cefic's October event in Europe and the Greenbriar meeting in the US that usually takes place in early summer (Q2/3).
