HOUSTON (CNI)--BASF Corporation said Monday it has purchased 23.9 acres and 15 storage tanks adjacent to its Pasadena, Texas manufacturing site to expand its North American plasticizer chemicals business.

The property currently contains an inactive methanol plant that BASF plans to dismantle, officials said in a statement.  BASF did not provide a timetable for the expansion.

Florham Park, New Jersey-based BASF acquired its Pasadena site when it purchased Sunoco’s phthalate plasticizer business in January 2004. The company manufactures phthalic anhydride and oxo alcohols at the facility, which are used as raw materials for plasticizers.

Martha Brabston, business director of BASF's oxo alcohol and plasticizers business in North America, said BASF is enhancing the flexibility of its Pasadena manufacturing site.

She added: "It facilitates further expansion at the site, helps us to serve the varying needs of our customers and demonstrates our commitment to expanding our presence in the plasticizer marketplace."
