Pemex petchem revenues up 47% through August

SAO PAULO (CNI)--Petroleos Mexicanos’ (Pemex) petrochemicals sales revenues increased by 47.1% during the first eight months of 2004 to Pesos 11.53bn ($1.02bn/Euro810m) over the same period in 2003, Pemex said in a statement Friday.

 

In terms of sales volumes, the company’s domestic sales reached 2.33m tonnes during the first eight months of 2004, a 12.6% increase over 2003 levels.

 

On the domestic market, top selling products were polyethylene (PE), with sales of 276 300 tonnes; ammonia, with sales of 372 000 tonnes and ethylene oxide (EO), with sales of 131 000 tonnes during the eight-month period.

 

The company produced 7.02m tonnes of petrochemicals during the first eight months of the year, a 3.3% increase over 2003 production levels.

 

Pemex also said that it posted a positive trade balance in petrochemicals products of $125.8m.  The company’s exports totalled $147.9m, with imports of $22.1m during the period.

 

Pemex is seeking to revitalize its petrochemicals industry.  Later this month, the company is expected to announce its partners on the Phoenix project, a $1.8bn petrochemical project.

 

Earlier this week, Mexico’s President Vicente Fox said he would travel to Canada in an effort to meet with petrochemicals companies interested in investing in Mexico.
