HOUSTON (CNI)--BASF plans to increase diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI) and polyols prices in North America effective 1 December, it was announced Friday.

BASF North America, headquartered in New Jersey, said it would increase the price of Lupranate MDI (pure and polymeric) and Pluracol polyols $220.40 (Euro170)/tonne.  It was not clear if customers would accept the proposed increase.

Said Larry Berkowski, director of BASF’s urethane chemicals business in North America: “Demand has increased substantially over the past year, up about 20% for MDI and 10% for polyols, while capacities remain tight.”

Berkowski said BASF's costs continue to rise for many polyurethane chemical precursors, including propylene oxide (PO) chlorine, benzene and natural gas, and the company must raise prices to preserve margins.
