HOUSTON (CNI)--Canadian-based global energy and chemicals company Nexen announced Monday it has commissioned the expansion of its Brandon, Manitoba sodium chlorate plant.

The expansion increases sodium chlorate production by 65 000 tonne/year, raising the plant’s capacity to more than 260 000 tonne/year. Nexen said its Brandon facility, 120 miles west of Winnipeg, is the largest sodium chlorate plant in the world.

Production from the expansion began ahead of schedule on 21 October. Nexen said the plant also reached full production capacity sooner than anticipated.

"Our business model focuses on improving margins by reducing costs and expanding our global market share," said Charlie Fischer, Nexen's president and chief executive. "The Brandon plant is the lowest cost plant in North America and one of the lowest cost plants in the world. The increased size of the plant should lower our overall operating costs, leading to improved margins and profitability."

Nexen’s chemicals division produces sodium chlorate, chlorine, muriatic acid and caustic soda. These products are used in applications including pulp and paper processing, manufacture of building and consumer products and water purification. Nexen is headquartered in Calgary, Alberta.
