LONDON (CNI)--European Union (EU) chemicals production rose by 3.7% in September compared with the same period last year, according to figures released Wednesday by statistics agency Eurostat.
The growth in chemicals output significantly exceeded overall industrial growth in the 25-member EU. It was also comfortably above the trend line growth rate in the EU chemicals sector over the first nine months of 2004.
For the 12-member eurozone, chemicals output increased 4.2% in September, year-on-year, and was up 2.1% compared with August.
A spokeswoman for Eurostat pointed out, however, that August chemical output statistics had been revised heavily, both for the EU 25 and the eurozone. She said EU 25 output in August was now recorded as down 1.0% year-on-year and 0.9% lower month-on-month. Eurozone production is now shown as down 2.1% in August year-on-year and 1.7% lower compared with July.
Overall industrial production in the EU during September rose 2.6% year-on-year and was up 2.9% in the eurozone. Compared with August, output increased 0.4% in the EU and 0.5% in the eurozone.
