Chevron Phillips Chemical licenses technology to CEPSA

HOUSTON (CNI)--Chevron Phillips Chemical has entered into a contract to license its Aromax process and catalyst technologies for the production of benzene, toluene and hydrogen to Compañía Espanola de Petróleos (Cepsa).

 

The contract also includes Chevron Phillips’ proprietary metals protection technology for the prevention of carburization.  The financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

The Chevron Phillips technology, "paired with appropriate feedstock, provides refiners with competitive supplies of hydrogen while upgrading that feedstock to value-added aromatics products,” said Manuel Abollado, senior vice president technology, refining and gas for Spain-based Cepsa.

The technology will be used by Cepsa in its Huelva, Spain aromatics facility as part of a large refinery project that includes an upgrade of existing facilities as well as new construction.  The project is expected to start in 2006.  Chevron Phillips will provide consultation and support during the detailed design and construction of the Aromax plant.  In addition, Chevron Phillips representatives are expected to provide training and start-up support.

Chevron Phillips, based in the Woodlands, 27 miles north of Houston, said the agreement is a continuation of its strategy to license selectively its Aromax technology. The same technology is being used at Saudi Chevron Phillips, a joint venture between a Chevron Phillips subsidiary and the Saudi Industrial Investment Group in Al Jubail, Saudi Arabia, as well as at Chevron Phillips Chemical’s facility in Pascagoula, Mississippi.
