SINGAPORE (CNI)--Japan’s Mitsubishi Rayon Co (MRC) has started debottlenecking its methyl methacrylate (MMA) plant in Thailand, a company spokesman told CNI on Monday.

The debottlenecking at the Mab Ta Phut plant, which is a joint venture with Cementhai Chemicals, started on Friday and is expected to be completed by the second week of January 2005.

When the work is completed, the plant will have a capacity of 90 000 tonne/year, up from its existing 70 000 tonne/year.

The MRC spokesman also said that the company started construction work on its new MMA plant at Huizhou in Guangdong province, China, in mid-October.

The plant, which will have a capacity of 90 000 tonne/year and is being built at a cost of some $100m, is expected to come onstream in June 2006.

The Chinese and Thai projects, together with the company’s existing MMA plant in Otake in Hiroshima prefecture, would give MRC a total MMA capacity of 400 000 tonne/year upon completion.

This is part of the company’s plans to increase its MMA production capacity in the region to cater to high demand from the electronics industry, in particular from liquid crystal display (LCD) makers.
