LONDON (CNI)--Belgian chemicals and pharmaceuticals group Solvay said Tuesday that its US affiliate Solvay Advanced Polymers will invest over $50m (Euro38m) in a world-scale sulphone polymers plant.
To be built at an undisclosed US location, the plant will almost triple Solvay's existing polyethersulphone (PES) production capacity.
Solvay declined to quantify its existing PES production capacity, which is located at plants in Marietta, Ohio and Augusta, Georgia. It also refused to disclose planned capacity of the new plant, which is due for commissioning in 2006.
A spokesman for Solvay told CNI that Marietta and Augusta plus other unidentified US locations were under consideration for the new plant.
The Solvay spokesman said a design package has been developed which would allow the plant to be adapted easily for whichever site was chosen. Solvay is expected to make a final decision on the location in the first quarter of 2005.
Together with Solvay's existing sulphone polymer facilities, the new plant will be able to produce the full suite of Radel products, which include Radel A polyethersulphone and Radel R polyphenylsulphone. Solvay said the properties of these products – including chemical and heat resistance, toughness, transparency and dimensional stability – allowed their use in a variety of demanding applications in the aerospace, automotive, electronic, electrical and consumer goods sectors.
Doug Brademeyer, Solvay's global business director for sulphone polymers, said: “The new unit will position us to support growing global markets such as automotive lighting, telecommunications, and food service. Plus, it will provide us greater opportunity to explore and develop new markets and applications in the future on a competitive basis.”
