China's Jiangsu Tianyin confirms plant explosion, death toll

SHANGHAI (CNI)--China's Jiangsu Tianyin Chemical Industry confirmed that one of its chemical plants in Jiangsu province, eastern China, suffered an explosion on Thursday, a company official told CNI on Friday.

He also confirmed that the blast killed five and injured 11 workers as reported by China’s Xinhua state news agency on Thursday.

The official said that the company's senior officials visited the victims in hospital on Friday. He declined to comment on the company's operations or the impact of the blast.

Xinhua said that the blast ignited a fire in a nearby storehouse and killed and wounded the workers. It added that officials were investigating the cause of the explosion.

Jiangsu Tianyin Chemical Industry produces a range of petrochemical products including glycol ether, acetate solvents, plasticisers, polyester fibre, and pharmaceutical intermediates.
