A company official said that the plant started to produce on-spec material on 28 February, two days earlier than expected.
The cumene plant is part of a new integrated facility that includes a new 180,000 tonne/year phenol plant and a 120,000 tonne/year bisphenol-A (BPA) plant. The facility would also be able to produce 110,000 tonne/year of acetone as a by-product. ?xml:namespace>
The official said the company plans to gradually hike the operating rate of the cumene plant after its phenol plant comes into operation on 15 April.
He declined to reveal the plant's current operating rate, but he said that it would produce 7,000 tonne of feedstock for its phenol plant over the next 45 days until the phenol plant starts commercial production.
The BPA plant will start up on 1 May, he added. Construction of the Won220bn ($191m/Euro158m) project began in 2002.
While the cumene will be used captively as a feedstock for the company’s phenol and BPA production, the company plans to export up to 50% of its phenol and BPA output to the Asian market where the demand for polycarbonate, a derivative of BPA, is strong.
