LONDON (CNI)--German chemicals and energy group BASF and Japan's Sakai Chemical Industry announced on Thursday an agreement to collaborate on the development of a new range of ultra-violet (UV) filters using inorganic titanium dioxide (TiO2) grades made by Sakai.

Under the agreement, Sakai will produce microfine TiO2 for the filters which BASF will market globally with the exception of Japan.

BASF said the new TiO2-based product range would be sold under the trade name T-Lite.

Thomas Saupe, director of cosmetic solutions at BASF, said Sakai’s capabilities in advanced nanotechnology and powder modification will enable BASF to offer high performing TiO2 grades to the cosmetics industry.

He added that the new grades would help BASF's customers generate cosmetic formulations with high sun protection factors.

BASF said other advantages of T-Lite grades were high performance and improved transparency as well as ease of use in formulations.
