HOUSTON (CNI)--Rohm & Haas (R&H) said Friday the expansion of its Marl, Germany plant would yield an additional 59,000 tonne/year of acrylic acid.

The plant, which now has capacity of 181,000 tonne/year, would become one of the largest acrylic acid plants in Europe. It is operated by StoHaas, a 50:50 joint venture (jv) between Rohm & Haas and Degussa.

Rohm and Haas, a Philadelphia, Pennsylvania-based specialty materials company, also confirmed that start-up is expected in July 2006.

Gerard Tarzia, vice president and business unit director for the company's monomer business, said: “This investment demonstrates our continued commitment to the acrylic chain. This expansion will provide Rohm & Haas with additional capacity to meet continued growth in its downstream acrylic polymer businesses, as well as the growing demand for acrylic monomer in our European merchant market.”
