BP Refinery Blast: No effect seen on chem derivatives

HOUSTON (CNI)--US chemical industry sources said Thursday that products such as cumene, phenol, acetone, and methyl methacrylate (MMA) were not likely to be affected by the BP refinery explosion in Texas City, Texas.

Market players said neither production nor pricing would be impacted for those chemicals.

BP said although the isomerisation unit was destroyed, other units at the refinery were operating normally.

In a visit to the refinery Thursday, BP chief executive John Browne said the loss of the isomerisation unit should not affect US gasoline supplies because stocks are currently high.
