SAN ANTONIO, Texas--The Chemical Heritage Foundation honoured Ting Tsung (TT) Chao on Sunday for his accomplishments in the industry over 50 years.

He was given the Petrochemical Heritage Award during the National Petrochemical & Refiners Association’s (NPRA) International Petrochemical Conference (IPC) here.

Chao founded and built several successful businesses, beginning with Taiwan’s first polyvinyl chloride (PVC) business. Ten years later he founded China General Plastics Group, which included a number of petchem and plastics manufacturers in Asia.

Chao entered the North American industry in the 1980s, creating Westlake Polymers Corp. In the late 1980s, he founded the Titan Group in Malaysia by building the nation’s first integrated petrochemical complex. And in 1992, he formed a joint venture company in China to make PVC resin.

Albert Chao, president of Westlake Chemical, accepted the award for his father, whom he called “a true pioneer in the industry, building and developing many first-of-its-kind businesses. Despite an ever-changing landscape, he has consistently maintained his high principles and values.”

The IPC continues through Tuesday.
