LONDON (CNI)--Belgian pharmaceuticals, chemicals and plastics group Solvay said Tuesday it will start-up production at its 100,000 tonne/year sodium bicarbonate plant in Bernburg, Germany site at the end of the year.

A company spokesman said Solvay has invested Euro16m ($20.7m) in the facility, which will increase Solvay's total European sodium bicarbonate production to 535,000 tonne/year.

Solvay's other sodium bicarbonate production sites in Europe are located in Ebensee in Austria, Rheinberg in Germany, Dombasle in France, Torrelavega in Spain, Devnya in Bulgaria, Povoa in Portugal and Rosignano in Italy. The company also has a 135,000 tonne plant in Parachute in Colorado, US.

The spokesman said Solvay will start supplying customers soon after the start-up of production.

Sodium bicarbonate can be used in several pharmaceutical and paramedical applications such as haemodialysis. It is also traditionally used in the human and animal food industries, in detergents, fire extinguishers and for the cleaning of surfaces and the removal of asbestos.
