Biodiesel—The City of Denton, Tex., and Biodiesel Industries Inc. are planning to build a 3 million gallon biodiesel plant, said to be the first renewable-energy powered plant to produce biodiesel. The plant will use biogas extracted from an adjacent landfill. In other news, Volkswagen AG, under its joint research agreement with Archer Daniels Midland Company, is extending warranty protection for the use of biodiesel blend fuel in all of its US market diesel-powered automobiles. The warranty protection covers biodiesel blends of up to 5 percent.
Cargill and Materia Inc. have extended a development agreement for Cargill’s use of Materia’s olefin metathesis technology for converting bio-based oils to industrial chemicals. The agreement provides Cargill an expanded field and exclusive license while providing Materia increased funding for accelerated research.
Monsanto Company has acquired selected agricultural assets of biotechnology research company Icoria Inc. for $6.75 million. The assets relate to transgenic traits for agriculture.
Mycogen Seeds is expanding seed production facilities in York, Neb., and Marshalltown, Iowa. The expansion is expected to be complete by September 2005.
