SHANGHAI (CNI)--China’s Yangzi-BASF Styrenics Co will have a turnaround for its styrene monomer (SM), polystyrene (PS) and expandable PS (EPS) plants at Nanjing, Jiangsu province, in the third quarter of 2005, a company source told CNI on Monday.

The maintenance shutdown will be held in conjunction with the turnaround for Yangzi Petrochemical’s cracker in the third quarter, the source added. Yangzi told CNI earlier that the turnaround for its 650,000 tonne/year cracker had been delayed to the third quarter from the second quarter.

Yangzi supplies ethylene and benzene to Yangzi-BASF, which produces 120,000 tonne/year of SM, 110,000 tonne/year of high-purpose PS (HIPS), 70,000 tonne/year of general-purpose PS (GPPS) and 52,000 tonne/year of EPS.

The official said that the company would be changing the catalyst for the SM unit during the turnaround, which will last around 20 days.

The company does not produce sufficient SM for captive use and is a net buyer of the product. It is currently running its PS and EPS plants at 70-80% of their capacities due to weak demand.
